Shawn was hired in April 2000 as a Department of Public Works operator. Shawn was formally appointed to the DPW Supervisor position on November 15, 2010. Shawn oversees various public works tasks including:
Preparing annual budget needs for the Department of Public Works, Parkview Cemetery, Community Center, City Hall, the water system, the sewer collection system, and parks & recreation.
Clearing snow from the City streets in the winter
Managing DPW Motor/Equipment Pool
Maintain records for equipment and maintenance
Overseeing water and sewer projects
Ensuring potholes are always filled
Obtaining water meter readings and maintaining meter reading equipment
Plowing City streets and clearing sidewalks after heavy snowfall events
Certified to operate Water System
Reporting and maintenance of schedules
Assists Citizen and the public to answer questions and help solve problems
The DPW crew handles a variety of tasks for City residents and taxpayers. Some of these tasks include:
Plowing snow on all City streets. M-37 is NOT a City street, and is maintained by the Newaygo County Road Commission.
Leaves (bagged & piled) and brush pick-up.
Hydrant flushing in April and October annually. Additional flushing when needed.
Patching the few potholes found within the City limits.
Building/grounds maintenance of the Community Center, City Hall, the Waste Water Treatment Plant, the Well House, Parkview Cemetery, Blanche Lake Park, Water Tower Park, and the Skate Park.
Parkview Cemetery burials and maintenance.
The DPW also handles numerous other functions that many people do not even know about! One example is putting up/taking down the Christmas decorations on the new L.E.D. streetlights. They also change out banners and American Flags a couple of times every year.
