She was hired in September 1997 as the City Treasurer/Deputy Clerk, and served in this position until 2005. She was promoted to the City Clerk position in May 2005, and served as Interim City Manager from late spring to late summer 2005 until Frank Peterson was hired. Sherry served in this capacity again from early spring to summer 2007 when Frank left for a new opportunity and Doug La Fave was hired. In June 2007, Sherry was appointed to Assistant City Manager/Clerk. In 2013 she served as Interim City Manager when Doug left for a new opportunity until Ryan Rudzis was hired. As a stepping stone community, the City of Grant typically hires new college graduates into the role of City Manager. Eventually they move, stepping up to serve a larger community.
Sherry has a dual degree in Accounting and Computer Information Systems from Baker College. She is constantly continuing her education between Baker College, Ferris State University, MAMC, and International Institute of Municipal Clerks. She is a graduate of the Leadership in Newaygo County (LINC) comprehensive leadership series. Sherry obained her Certified Municipal Clerk certification from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks in October 2010 and the Certified Michigan Municipal Clerk certification from the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks in April 2015. Sherry has served as the City of Grant's representative on the Chamber of Commerce for many years. Sherry was elected Vice President of the Board of Directors of the former Grant Area Chamber of Commerce (since integrated into the River Country Chamber of Commerce of Newaygo County) and also served as Grant Frontier Festival Chair in 2010 and 2011. Sherry has helped create several community events designed to improve the quality of life of the great Grant community. Nearly a decade has been devoted to improving and growing the Grant Community Christmas event, which provides completely free activities to hundreds of area families. From free pictures with Santa, horse-drawn wagon rides, cookie decorating, kids games, and visits from their favorite characters. She has also served several years as the City of Grant's representative on the Ashland-Grant Fire Board as well as the Grant Area District Library Board of Trustees.
Memberships: Womens Municipal Leadership Program, Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks, Michigan Local Government Managers Association, International Institute of Municipal Clerks, and Michigan Municipal League.
City Clerk Job Duties Include:
Administers all Elections for the City of Grant Precinct#1and the Grant Public School Election Precinct #6
Maintains Entire Voter Registration Database and Issuance of New Cards
Maintains official records including Meeting Minutes, Agendas, Ordinances, and Resolutions
Maintains all records and database for Parkview Cemetery
Currently serves as Ex-officio member of the City Planning Commission
Advisory member of the Downtown Development Authority
Member of the Wellhead Protection Team
Administers General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Payroll
Maintains Human Resources records, forms, reports, and returns
Assists with Budgeting and Budget Amendments
Maintains City's Revenues and Disbursements information utilizing BS&A Fund Accounting Software and Procedures
Assists with Zoning Compliance Permits and Economic Development as needed
Administers Oaths of Office for elected and appointed officials and staff
Assists City Manager with Maintenance of City Website
Provides Crosstraining for Administrative Staff and oversight of student interns
Represents the City of Grant on the Chamber of Commerce
Assists with Numerous Related City functions As Needed
Assists with Grant Writing and Planning
Serves the community as a Notary Public
