Ashland-Grant Fire District Service Map |

The Ashland-Grant Fire District serves Ashland Township, Grant Township, and the City of Grant. Each municipality appoints representatives to the Joint Fire District Administrative Board, which oversees operations and prepares an annual balanced budget. Major capital purchases and the budget require approval from all municipalities before adoption. Each entity is responsible for funding its obligations under the Fire Contract, typically through a dedicated property tax millage or General Fund contributions.
Since the Fire District does not levy its own millage, funding is determined by a uniform millage rate applied to each municipality's taxable property value. The current rate totals 1.25 mills, allocated as 0.50 mills for operations, 0.50 mills for equipment, and 0.25 mills for medical first responders. Contributions vary based on taxable value, not arbitrary decisions. Additionally, portions of Bridgeton and Garfield Townships are billed per call for contracted services.
Ashland and Grant Townships, due to their larger size, tax base, and population, contribute more in total dollars than the City of Grant, which provides an equal millage share but a smaller financial contribution. Public concerns about funding disparities often stem from focusing on dollar amounts rather than the proportional tax structure. Reviewing the Fire District Contract and service map can help clarify funding and service distribution.
